Matthews NC started as a small farming community in the late 1800s. The cotton mills in the area cleared the land for their fields, leaving tree stumps in all directions. This led to the first name for the community, “Stumptown”.
The history of Matthews as a town and commerce center is over 100 years old, however, many of the town’s 25,000 residents are new to Matthews within in the past decade. Young families are attracted by affordable homes in beautiful new subdivisions, strong schools, lower taxes (which are now very similar to Mecklenburg County’s tax rate) and the historic central downtown.
Some of Matthews’ historic homes remain around the fringes of Matthews historic town center, however this area has seen tremendous growth primarily with new subdivisions off the main streets. Homes for sale in Matthews range from transitional to historic colonial to craftsman style.
